One night in 1988 the radar site above Ankara held a stationary target far larger than an airliner over the president's district. F-16s painted it on their radars and were withdrawn when it climbed; armed F-4s were sent next and it climbed to about 50,000 ft. The duty commander says all of Ankara saw it, President Özal among them, and that his report got no answer.
