In their own words

“l'engin avait la forme de deux assiettes renversées, l'une contre l'autre. Il devait mesurer environ un mètre cinquante de hauteur. Il avait la couleur du plomb.”
Renato Nicolaï, witness, gendarmerie statement, 9 January 1981 · source

On the afternoon of 8 January 1981, Renato Nicolaï, a former building worker on an invalidity pension who was working on a pump shelter behind his house, heard a faint whistle. He saw a lead-coloured object shaped like two inverted plates come down onto a terrace on his property. It stayed only moments, then rose and left toward the north-east. Next morning he showed his wife a circular mark on the ground. A neighbour alerted the gendarmerie, who examined the marks and took soil and plant samples on 9 January. GEPAN, the UAP unit of the French space agency CNES, collected more plant samples on 17 February. GEPAN had soil and vegetation analysed by several laboratories, including the biochemist Michel Bounias at INRA Avignon. Its Note Technique nº 16 (1 March 1983) concluded that the analyses showed "an event of great magnitude" involving mechanical deformation, heating (below 600°C) and possibly trace deposits of material, and that the plant samples showed distance-graded biochemical changes. It also stated that these results did not definitively confirm the witness's account. Sceptics (Michel Figuet in 1995; Rossoni, Maillot and Déguillaume in 2007) argue the marks were tyre skids and the case a hoax. That is proposed, not demonstrated. GEIPAN is reported to classify the case as "D" (unexplained after investigation). I could not load the GEIPAN case page to confirm this.

Plausibility weighs how well an account fits where secrecy hides the documents by design, so missing records never count against it. Strength measures what is documented. Assessed 2026-10-23.

On the record

  • Gendarmerie PV of 9 January 1981 (firsthand witness statement, extract in NT16 §3.1): "Hier, 8 Janvier 1981 … Il était environ 17 heures … Mon attention a été attirée par un léger bruit, une sorte de petit sifflement … j'ai vu en l'air un engin qui se trouvait à la hauteur d'un gros pin." "l'engin avait la forme de deux assiettes renversées, l'une contre l'autre. Il devait mesurer environ un mètre cinquante de hauteur. Il avait la couleur du plomb." When it lifted off he saw underneath "quatre ouvertures par lesquelles ne s'échappait ni flamme ni fumée"; he was about 30 m away; it left toward the north-east. "Je n'ai ressenti aucun trouble de la vue ou de l'ouie." He had been on an invalidity pension since a 1973 heart attack and had not worked since November 1979.
The phrase about tyre skid marks is the gendarmes' own comparison.
  • Investigation timeline (NT16 §1): The gendarmerie was alerted by the neighbours and arrived on 9 January at about 11:30. It took photos, a soil sample (P1) and plant samples. GEPAN learned of the case on 12 January. Heavy rain fell on 10-11 January. GEPAN did not go at once and asked the gendarmerie to send samples to the labs. The gendarmes took control plant samples on 23 January. GEPAN visited on 17 February, 40 days after the event, and took 8 plant samples (E1-E8) along one line plus a soil control (P2).
  • GEPAN's witness assessment (NT16 §3.3-3.4): Single witness; no other witness was found. His various accounts differ mainly in wording, which GEPAN attributes more to the interviewers than to the witness. He thought it was "sans doute un engin militaire", pointing to a large military training camp nearby. The anonymised note calls it "JOUVAN"; my guess is that this means Canjuers, but that is unverified. GEPAN found no sign of invention or exaggeration, but noted that "l'absence de preuve n'étant pas … la preuve de l'absence".
  • Air activity (NT16 §5.2): The army aviation (ALAT) reported one Alouette II helicopter over the area at about 200 m altitude around 16:30 local on 8 January. At that camp, the only notable activity was short-range inert tank-gun firing more than 25 km to the north.
  • Soil analyses (NT16 §6; labs: SNEAP Boussens, Université Paul Sabatier / Rangueil, LPMIA Faculté de Metz, LDP Pau). Findings: compaction and surface striation, with a flint fragment cut and polished; no organic combustion residues from hydrocarbon engines (SNEAP); iron or iron oxide in micron-thick streaks on limestone grains; phosphate and zinc traces, and a polymeric carbon matrix "analogous to … certain polymers or petroleum residues" (Metz); a monocrystalline compound absent from the control sample; heating, but "dont la valeur n'a pas excédé 600°".
