Carrer et al. 2024: a lava-tube cave under Mare Tranquillitatis

Peer-reviewed Nature Astronomy paper by an Italian team at the University of Trento. By re-reading 2010 radar data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, they showed that a pit in Mare Tranquillitatis opens into an underground conduit, the first directly detected cave on the Moon.

The Mare Tranquillitatis pit seen from above by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's narrow-angle camera. The pit is about 100 metres across; the 2024 radar study traced a cave conduit leading off it underground.
