The secret keepers have not only denied; they have planted stories. From 1980 Air Force Office of Special Investigations agent Richard Doty fed Albuquerque engineer Paul Bennewitz forged documents and tales of alien bases, which pushed him into breakdown, and Doty later admitted his job was to spread lies. In the 1980s an Air Force colonel handed doctored flying-saucer photos to a bar owner near Area 51, to cover tests of the F-117 stealth fighter. Some new recruits to classified programs were told they had joined an alien reverse-engineering program, in what AARO calls a hazing ritual. To believers the pattern is the point: false leads are mixed with real ones, so that every true witness can be dismissed with the false ones.

Plausibility weighs how well an account fits where secrecy hides the documents by design, so missing records never count against it. Strength measures what is documented. Assessed 2026-10-23.

On the record

  • Doty's own admissions in Greg Bishop's book Project Beta (2005) and the documentary Mirage Men (2013).
  • The Wall Street Journal's June 2025 report on AARO's findings: the colonel confessed to Pentagon investigators in 2023 that the Area 51 photos were doctored.
  • AARO says officers were falsely briefed about alien programs as a hazing ritual, and that its next historical report will cover disinformation programs and 'inauthentic materials'.
  • WSJ: incoming officers were shown a saucer photo, told they had joined "Yankee Blue", a reverse-engineering program, and warned they could be "jailed or executed"; many never learned it was fake. A Defense Secretary's office memo in spring 2023 ordered it stopped.
  • WSJ: "The Pentagon omitted key facts in the public version of the 2024 report... both to protect classified secrets and to avoid embarrassment." The Air Force pushed to omit details and asked AARO to hold the hazing finding even after Kirkpatrick had briefed lawmakers. Investigators were still trying to tell whether it was local commanders or "a more centralized, institutional program".
  • Volume II of AARO's Historical Record Report, promised for mid-2024 and then late 2025 to cover pranks and inauthentic materials, was still unpublished as of 15 October 2026.

Managing what we believeThe secrecy has never been just silence. The CIA kept quiet that U-2 flights explained many 1950s sightings. An Air Force agent fed a researcher forged stories of alien bases and later admitted it. For decades incoming officers were shown a fake saucer photo and told they were joining a reverse-engineering program, a…
