In 1989 physicist Bob Lazar told George Knapp on Las Vegas TV that he had worked on nine alien craft at a hidden site called S-4 near Area 51; documents back his employment and the base, but the craft have never been confirmed or shown to be false.

Until 1989 Area 51 was a rumour among aviation buffs, and the government would not even say its name. Then, on KLAS-TV in Las Vegas, physicist Bob Lazar told reporter George Knapp, first in shadow and then by name, that he had worked at 'S-4', a hangar complex built into the mountains by Papoose Lake, a few miles south of the Groom Lake base. He said nine alien craft were stored there and being reverse-engineered, and he described the 'sport model' saucer, a gravity-amplifier drive and a stable 'element 115' fuel. Overnight the base became the most famous secret in the world. Lazar even took friends out to watch test flights on Wednesday nights, and that led to his exposure. The CIA did not officially admit Area 51 existed until 2013.

  • ●●
Restraint Says only the sport model is certain; withholds names.

Against
  • −
Lone source, no corroboration No second S-4 witness on record.

Story grew Details such as the underwater origin shifted.

Plausibility weighs how well an account fits where secrecy hides the documents by design, so missing records never count against it. Strength measures what is documented. Assessed 2026-10-23.

On the record

  • The KLAS-TV broadcasts with George Knapp, May and November 1989.
  • A W-2 from the Department of Naval Intelligence and a Los Alamos phone listing for Lazar that Knapp obtained.
  • The CIA's 2013 acknowledgment of Area 51, 24 years later.
  • Element 115 (moscovium) was first synthesized in 2003.
  • John Lear's dated video of 22 March 1989 narrates a craft seen through his telescope about 8 miles east of Groom Lake; the trips were stopped by security on 6 April 1989.Groom Range withdrawal (PL 98-485)
  • The 1989 USGS Papoose Lake map's 23 May 1989 date is an archive receipt stamp on a map compiled from 1968 photographs, not an edit made after Lazar went public.
