Genkai nuclear plant: three lights and Japan's first UAP policy push

On the evening of 26 July 2025 staff at the Genkai nuclear plant in Kyushu saw three lights over the site, and the operator reported a nuclear-material protection event. The regulator first announced three drones, then 'three lights thought to be drones'; none was found. Police later said aircraft lights were likely but a drone could not be ruled out. In May 2026 the Diet's UAP caucus cited the incident when it asked the government for a central UAP command function.
