Italy's Air Force OVNI archive and the Caselle airport sphere

In their own words
“a luminous globe emitting a dazzling glow, ranging from purple to blue passing through red-garnet tones.”
The archive. The Aeronautica Militare (Italian Air Force), through its Stato Maggiore, publishes its UFO ("O.V.N.I.") records on aeronautica.difesa.it/ovni. Reports from the public reach it mainly through the Carabinieri, and Air Force personnel check them against known flight activity, radiosonde launches and natural phenomena. Two kinds of document are published: - Retrospective dossiers (summary tables, one row per event, not the case files): - "Archivio OVNI 1972-1990": 227 pages, about 208 entries. The PDF was made in May 2023. - "Archivio OVNI 1991-2000": 122 pages, about 112 entries. - Annual reports since 2001, as short monthly tables. Each entry gives the date, time, place, shape, colour, speed, direction, altitude, weather and who reported it (private citizens, Carabinieri, Air Force, Navy or airline crews), plus a one-line verdict ("RISCONTRI"). - In the 1972-1990 dossier, about 201 of 208 entries are marked "catalogato come O.V.N.I." on review of the archive data. Only a handful are attributed to a star, a meteor, space debris, a sounding balloon or an airliner landing at Linate. - From 2001 the standard verdict is that the event could not be associated with known flight or radiosonde activity or a known natural phenomenon. - Many reports come from pilots and military personnel. For example: Alitalia AZ 122 on Fiumicino-Palermo, 14 Dec 1972; an ATI DC-9 captain and Air Force staff at Ronchi dei Legionari, 29 Sep 1973. The case. The strongest entry I found is Caselle Torinese, 30 November 1973 (dossier 1972-1990, entry 7 for 1973, PDF p. 11). The reporters were a civilian private pilot and Air Force personnel. The object was "luminescente non uniforme" with variable speed and direction, and the verdict is "catalogato come O.V.N.I." In the contemporaneous press (AFP via France-Soir, 2 Dec 1973; Le Provençal, 3 Dec 1973): - Caselle radar showed a return comparable to a DC-8. The tower warned private pilot Riccardo Marano of an object about 400 m up. - Marano approached and saw a luminous sphere shifting from purple to blue to garnet-red, and followed it toward the Ligurian coast before it climbed sharply away. - Col. Rustichelli, commander of the military side of Caselle, confirmed the sighting, and an Alitalia crew departing for Rome also reported it. The Air Force summary itself mentions no radar. The radar detail rests on the press. The official trail is therefore a dated government entry confirming the event, the reporters and the "OVNI" classification, without the underlying file.

Plausibility weighs how well an account fits where secrecy hides the documents by design, so missing records never count against it. Strength measures what is documented. Assessed 2026-10-23.
On the record
- The Air Force entry (official): place "Caselle Torinese (TO)"; date 30/11/1973; time 19.00; form "non indicato"; colour "luminescente non uniforme"; speed "variabile"; direction "variabile"; altitude "non indicato"; reported by "pilota civile di velivolo privato" and "personale Aeronautica Militare".
