America's first astronauts reported company. John Glenn saw luminous 'fireflies' around his capsule; Scott Carpenter described reflective 'snowflakes', some moving faster than his craft; Wally Schirra saw an unexplained flash of light. In November 1962 Gordon Cooper told Walter Cronkite that 'a large number of exceptionally well-qualified people have seen objects' with no logical explanation. war.gov has released the flight audio and the Cronkite interview.

Plausibility weighs how well an account fits where secrecy hides the documents by design, so missing records never count against it. Strength measures what is documented. Assessed 2026-10-23.

On the record

  • Mercury flight audio from Carpenter (MA-7), Schirra (MA-8) and Cooper (MA-9).
  • Cooper's 1962 interview with Walter Cronkite.
  • NASA later attributed the fireflies to ice flaking off the spacecraft.

Claims

Cooper, who later spoke openly about UFOs, knew more than he could say on the record.speculationSourced, unconfirmedbelievers
