Just before 11 in the morning, students and teachers at Westall High School in Melbourne's south-east saw a silvery, saucer-shaped object, many say about twice the size of a family car, come down behind a line of pine trees into the Grange, a paddock beside the school. Children ran across the oval to look. Witnesses describe it hovering low, flattening a circle of grass, then rising and shooting off to the north-west, with small light aircraft circling it. More than 200 people saw something that morning. Many say men in uniform came to the school afterwards, that the headmaster called an assembly and told them not to talk about it, and that a science teacher's photographs were taken away. For decades the witnesses kept quiet, until researcher Shane Ryan began gathering their stories in the 2000s.

Plausibility weighs how well an account fits where secrecy hides the documents by design, so missing records never count against it. Strength measures what is documented. Assessed 2026-10-23.

On the record

  • Reports in The Dandenong Journal and on Melbourne's GTV-9 news in the days after.
  • Interviews in 1966 by physicist James E. McDonald with teacher Andrew Greenwood, preserved on audio.
  • Dozens of adult witnesses interviewed for the 2010 documentary Westall '66: A Suburban UFO Mystery, by Rosie Jones.
  • In 2016, on the 50th anniversary, the City of Kingston opened the Grange Reserve UFO Park with a silver flying-saucer play structure.

The craft was non-human and landed on the Grange.firsthandSourced, unconfirmedWestall witnesses
The photo on this card is shared online as a Westall craft. It appears to be the Balwyn Polaroid, taken by a businessman in his garden on April 2, 1966, four days earlier and about 15 km away. The Victorian Flying Saucer Research Society found no sign of tampering. If it is the same kind of craft, Melbourne had a wave that week, not a single event.analysisSourced, unconfirmedcase researchers
Officials hushed it up: staff were silenced, a teacher's film confiscated, and the circle of grass later burnt.firsthandSourced, unconfirmedWestall witnesses
