The Apollo 10 'moon pigeon'

On the dress rehearsal for the Moon landing, Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan took the lunar module Snoopy down to about 15 km above the surface. Their film caught a bright white object flashing past below the spacecraft. NASA's own engineers at the Manned Spacecraft Center had a name for these things: 'moon pigeons', objects in mission photography that no one could positively identify. A 1970 NASA report, 'Moon Pigeons and Other Unidentified Visual Phenomena Associated with Space Flight', went through them case by case.

Plausibility weighs how well an account fits where secrecy hides the documents by design, so missing records never count against it. Strength measures what is documented. Assessed 2026-10-23.
