Person
John von Neumann
Hungarian-American mathematician of the Manhattan Project, the stored-program computer and game theory. From 1948 (the Hixon Symposium) he lectured on self-reproducing automata, about machines and biology in general. As an Atomic Energy Commissioner and head of the ICBM committee he died of cancer at Walter Reed in 1957 under Air Force guard, posted because he might reveal weapons secrets while sedated. Robert Sarbacher's 1983 letter names him as 'definitely involved' with the recovered saucer material.
