One anonymous caller on a 2002 radio show; the DSRV program and Craven's account of covert DSRV work are documented.

  • The witness: 'Mark', an anonymous radio caller (first name only), describes his own DSRV dive.
  • What he describes: a seamless charcoal triangle with glyph-like markings raised from 1.5 miles down, unusually light.
  • Context: DSRVs and Craven's covert seabed work are on the record; the link to Sand Dollar is Gerb's hypothesis.

WhereNorth Atlantic, about 250 nmi from Aberdeen, Scotland (Gerb estimates the Rockall Trough)

In 2002 a caller to Art Bell's radio show, 'Mark', described as a retired Marine lieutenant colonel, said that in the summer of 1991 his Navy deep submergence rescue vehicle crew raised a 60-70 ft charcoal-grey triangle from the seabed about 250 nautical miles from Aberdeen. It had markings like hieroglyphs, no seams or windows, and a marine archaeologist judged it had lain there for decades. UAP Gerb places the site in the Rockall Trough and links it to the Navy's Sand Dollar program. Nothing but the call records it.

How plausible · Low

An anonymous radio caller with plausible access and a story that fits documented covert deep-sea recovery, but one telling, no name and nothing to check.

  • ●○
Access Says he served on a Navy DSRV crew; first name only, unverified.
  • ●○
No gain sought A one-off call-in; no book or product known.
  • ●○
Checkable details check out The DSRV program and Craven's account of covert DSRV tasks are documented.
  • ●○
Fits the documented skeleton Covert deep-sea recovery capability (Sand Dollar, Glomar) is documented.
  • ●○
Fits secrecy practice An unacknowledged dive and recovery fits how such work was run.
Against
  • −
Lone source, no corroboration One anonymous caller; nothing else records the dive.

Plausibility weighs how well an account fits where secrecy hides the documents by design, so missing records never count against it. Strength measures what is documented. Assessed 2026-10-23.

A survey ship picked up a radioactive signature and a side-scan found something smaller than any known submarine on the seabed under about 1.5 miles of water; his DSRV crew from Virginia found a charcoal-grey triangle, nose-down in the mud with rounded rear corners, no windows, rivets or seams, and markings like hieroglyphs in the skin.Belgian waveanonymousLeadcaller 'Mark' (Art Bell, Coast to Coast AM, 19 Apr 2002)
A marine archaeologist taken down on a later dive judged from the silt that it had lain there 30-40 years; on the third day they rigged and raised it, it rose two and a half to three times faster than expected, it was 6-8 ft longer than an F-14, and the crew was sent off site within hours without a debrief.anonymousLeadcaller 'Mark' (Art Bell, Coast to Coast AM, 19 Apr 2002)
The Navy's Deep Submergence Systems Project (1964) produced the DSRVs Mystic and Avalon (Lockheed, 1970-2008); Craven wrote that DSRVs were also available for intelligence 'mission impossible' tasks. The Silent War: John Pina Craven on Project Sand Dollar (2001)US Navy UFO Crash Retrieval & Reverse Engineering ProgramsfirsthandOn the recordJohn Piña Craven, The Silent War; Navy records (cited by UAP Gerb)
The vehicle was an unacknowledged deep search vehicle rather than Mystic or Avalon, given the depth; the recovery fits Project Sand Dollar, and the triangle crashed in 1951-61, matching SOM1-01's 'new' triangles.US Navy UFO Crash Retrieval & Reverse Engineering ProgramsBelgian wavespeculationLeadUAP Gerb (Sam)
