Project Blue Book

The Air Force's public UFO investigation collected 12,618 reports. 701 stayed 'unidentified'. Its scientific consultant, astronomer J. Allen Hynek, began as a skeptic and left convinced something real was going on. After the University of Colorado's Condon Report, Blue Book closed on December 17, 1969, with the Air Force saying UFOs posed no threat. Researchers point out that a 1969 memo by Brig. Gen. Carroll Bolender stated that reports affecting national security would keep going through other channels.

How plausible · Very high
The Air Force's Bolender memo confirms security cases bypassed Blue Book, and Hynek came to think something real was going on.
